where are the totipotent stem cells found in plants?
in areas where the plant is growing e.g roots and shoots
1 of 8
why do stem cells become specialised?
becuase during their development they only transcribe and translate part of their DNA. only some DNA is translated to proteins. these proteins modify the cell
2 of 8
how can tissue culture be used to grow plants from a single totipotent cell?
- cell is taken from growing area of plant - put on sterile growth medium with nutrients/growth factors -grow into unspecilised cell bundle - cells mature in right conditions
3 of 8
totipotent cells in humans are present...
only in the early embryo
4 of 8
what type of stem cells exist in mature animals?
multipotent stem cells - they can only develop into afew cell types
5 of 8
why can stem cells be used to replace cells damaged by illness or injury?
they can divide intop other cell types
6 of 8
where do we get adult stem cells?
adult body tissue. low risk, high discomfort. multipotent - can only become a limited range of cells
7 of 8
where do we get embryonic stem cells?
The early embryo (IVF) - totipotent - can develop into all types of cell
