State of matter

?
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas
1 of 15
In each of the states of matter, how are the particles placed?
In solids, the particles are packed tightly together. In liquids, particles are very close together, but move frequently and randomly. In gases, particles are far apart and move randomly.
2 of 15
What happens when solids are heated?
When heated, the particles vibrate with a greater amplitude.
3 of 15
What happens when liquids are heated?
When heated, the average speed of particles increases.
4 of 15
What happens when gases are heated?
When heated, the average speed of particles increases.
5 of 15
What are four processes that cause change of state?
Condensing, freezing, boiling and melting
6 of 15
What happens when you heat something?
It either melts or boils
7 of 15
What happens when you cool something?
It either freezes or condenses
8 of 15
What does the amount of energy needed to change states depend on?
How strong or weak the forces are between the particles.
9 of 15
If the forces between particles are strong, is it easier or harder for them to change states?
Harder
10 of 15
Do objects with weak forces between the particles have a lower or higher boiling & melting point?
Lower
11 of 15
Sulfur has a boiling point of 445°C. What state will it be at 444°C?
Liquid
12 of 15
What are state symbols?
State symbols are letters that tell us what state of matter a substance is in.
13 of 15
What are the four state symbols and what do they mean?
(s) - solid. (l) - liquid. (aq) - aqueous solution (substances dissolved in water). (g) - gases.

What process happens when a liquid's temperature reaches its boiling point?
Evaporation
