Socrates section 4

καὶ ἅμ᾽ εἰπὼν ταῦτα ἐπισχόμενος καὶ μάλα εὐχερῶς καὶ εὐκόλως ἐξέπιεν.

And at the same time saying these things, having held up the cup and rather fearlessly and calmly he drank up.

καὶ ἡμῶν οἱ πολλοὶ τέως μὲν ἐπιεικῶς οἷοί τε ἦσαν κατέχειν τὸ μὴ δακρύειν, ὡς δὲ εἴδομεν πίνοντά τε καὶ πεπωκότα, οὐκέτι, 78

And many of us for a while we were able to hold ourselves back pretty well from crying, but when we saw him drinking and also that he had drunk (it), no longer

ἀλλ᾽ ἐμοῦ γε βίᾳ καὶ αὐτοῦ ἀστακτὶ ἐχώρει τὰ δάκρυα,

but very much in spite of myself the tears flowed in a flood,

ὥστε ἐγκαλυψάμενος ἀπέκλαον ἐμαυτόν—οὐ γὰρ δὴ ἐκεῖνόν γε, 80
ἀλλὰ τὴν ἐμαυτοῦ τύχην, οἵου ἀνδρὸς ἑταίρου ἐστερημένος εἴην.

So that covering my head I wept for myself — as indeed not for him, but for my own misfortune, thinking that I had been deprived of such a man as a companion.

ὁ δὲ Κρίτων ἔτι πρότερος ἐμοῦ, ἐπειδὴ οὐχ οἷός τ᾽ ἦν κατέχειν τὰ δάκρυα, ἐξανέστη.

But Crito even before me, since he wasn’t able to hold back the tears ,stood up and went out.

Ἀπολλόδωρος δὲ καὶ ἐν τῷ ἔμπροσθεν χρόνῳ οὐδὲν ἐπαύετο δακρύων, καὶ δὴ καὶ τότε ἀναβρυχησάμενος κλάων καὶ ἀγανακτῶν οὐδένα ὅντινα οὐ κατέκλασε τῶν παρόντων πλήν γε αὐτοῦ Σωκράτους. 87

And Apollodorus even in the former time did not stop crying, especially then bellowing, crying his eyes out, and being upset, did not make one of us (i.e. made all of us) present break down, except indeed Socrates himself.

ἐκεῖνος δέ, ‘οἷα,’ ἔφη, ‘ποιεῖτε, ὦ θαυμάσιοι.

But he said ‘you fellows, what’s all this you do, you strange fellows?

ἐγὼ μέντοι οὐχ ἥκιστα τούτου ἕνεκα τὰς γυναῖκας ἀπέπεμψα, ἵνα μὴ τοιαῦτα πλημμελοῖεν: 90

I however sent off the women not least for this very reason, so that they might not behave badly;

καὶ γὰρ ἀκήκοα ὅτι ἐν εὐφημίᾳ χρὴ τελευτᾶν. ἀλλ᾽ ἡσυχίαν τε ἄγετε καὶ καρτερεῖτε.’ 91

for I have heard also that it is necessary to die in silence. Both keep quiet and endure it.”

καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀκούσαντες ᾐσχύνθημέν τε καὶ ἐπέσχομεν τοῦ δακρύειν.

And we, having heard, fell silent, and we withheld from crying .

ὁ δὲ περιελθών, ἐπειδή οἱ βαρύνεσθαι ἔφη τὰ σκέλη, κατεκλίνη ὕπτιος—οὕτω γὰρ ἐκέλευεν ὁ ἄνθρωπος— καὶ ἅμα ἐφαπτόμενος αὐτοῦ οὗτος ὁ δοὺς τὸ φάρμακον,

But he, walking around, when he said his legs grew heavy, lay down on his back – as the attendant ordered him – and at the same time the attendant who had given him the poison was holding onto him

διαλιπὼν χρόνον ἐπεσκόπει τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰ σκέλη, κἄπειτα σφόδρα πιέσας αὐτοῦ τὸν πόδα ἤρετο εἰ αἰσθάνοιτο,

and leaving some time, examined his feet and his legs, then having pinched his foot hard, he asked if he felt it.

ὁ δ᾽ ‘οὐκ’ ἔφη.

He said “no”.

καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο αὖθις τὰς κνήμας: καὶ ἐπανιὼν οὕτως ἡμῖν ἐπεδείκνυτο ὅτι ψύχοιτό τε καὶ πήγνυτο.

And after this he squeezed again his thighs; and going up in this way he showed us that they were becoming both cold and stiff.

καὶ αὐτὸς ἥπτετο καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι, ἐπειδὰν πρὸς τῇ καρδίᾳ γένηται αὐτῷ, τότε οἰχήσεται.

And again he touched him and said that when it reached his heart, then he would be gone.

ἤδη οὖν σχεδόν τι αὐτοῦ ἦν τὰ περὶ τὸ ἦτρον ψυχόμενα, καὶ 104 ἐκκαλυψάμενος—ἐνεκεκάλυπτο γάρ—εἶπεν—ὃ δὴ τελευταῖον ἐφθέγξατο—‘ὦ Κρίτων,’ ἔφη, ‘τῷ Ἀσκληπιῷ ὀφείλομεν ἀλεκτρυόνα: ἀλλὰ ἀπόδοτε καὶ μὴ ἀμελήσητε.’

The chill had now reached the region around his lower abdomen, and uncovering his face, for it was hidden, he said—and it was indeed the last thing he said—“Crito,’’ he said ”we owe a cockerel to Aesculapius. But give it back and do not fail to do it.”

‘ἀλλὰ ταῦτα,’ ἔφη, ‘ἔσται’, ὁ Κρίτων: ‘ἀλλ᾽ ὅρα εἴ τι ἄλλο λέγεις.’

“But these things,” said Crito, “will be done; but see if you say anything else.”

ταῦτα ἐρομένου αὐτοῦ οὐδὲν ἔτι ἀπεκρίνατο, ἀλλ᾽ ὀλίγον χρόνον 113 διαλιπὼν ἐκινήθη τε καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐξεκάλυψεν αὐτόν, καὶ ὃς τὰ ὄμματα ἔστησεν: ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Κρίτων συνέλαβε τὸ στόμα καὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.

With having asked these things he replied nothing further, but leaving a little time he moved - and the attendant uncovered him; and his eyes (i.e. Socrates’) were fixed. And Crito seeing it, he closed his mouth and his eyes.

ἥδε ἡ τελευτή, ὦ Ἐχέκρατες, τοῦ ἑταίρου ἡμῖν ἐγένετο, ἀνδρός, ὡς ἡμεῖς φαῖμεν ἄν, τῶν τότε ὧν ἐπειράθημεν ἀρίστου καὶ ἄλλως φρονιμωτάτου καὶ δικαιοτάτου.

In this way, Echecrates, the end of our friend happened, a man who was, as we may say, of all those at that time whom we have known, the best and the wisest and the most just.
