Internalisation
A deep type of conformity where we take on the majority view because we accept it as correct. It leads to a permenant change in behaviour, even when the group is absent.

Identification
A modertae type of conformity where we act im the same way with the group because we value it and want to be part of it. But we don't necessarily agree with everything the majority believes.

Compliance
A superficial and temporary type of conformity where we outwardly go along with the majority view, but privately disagree with it. The change in our behaviour only lasts as long as the group is monitoring us.

Informational Social Influence (ISI)
An explaination of conformity that says we agree with the opinion of the majority because we believe is as correct. We accept it as we want to be correct as well. This may lead to internalisation and occur is situations that are new. Cognitive.

Normative Social Influence (NSI)
An explaination of conformity that says we agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to be accepted, gain social approval and be liked. This may lead to compliance. Emotional.

Lucas - Research Support ISI
Answered different difficulty math problems, greater conformity to incorrect answers when they were difficult. Most true for those regarded themselves bad at maths. Shows people conform in situations where they don't know the answers.

McGhee and Teevan - Individual Differences in NSI
People who want to be liked affected by NSI (nAffiliators), greater need for affiliation, relationships with others. Shows desire to be liked is stronger in some and those are more likely to conform than those who don't.

ISI and NSI Work Together
Conformity is reduced when there is another nonconforming reducing power of NSI as have social support and reduce ISI as alternative source of info. True is lab studies, even more in real life. ISI and NSI may not work independently.

Asch - Research Support NSI
Found people went along with clear wrong answer as others did because they were self-concious and afraid of disapproval. Conformity dropped when people wrote down their answers instead of out loud to 12%.
