Define Conformity
A change in belief or behaviour in response to a real or imagined social pressure. Also known as majority influence.

What are the 3 types of conformity?
Compliance, Internalisation and Identification

What is compliance?
When a person publicly changes their viewpoint or beliefs but does not privately - a temporary change.

What is Internalisation?
When a person publicly changes their viewpoint or beliefs while also internally changing them. An internal and external change of behaviour. The deepest level of conformity.

What is identification?
When a person conforms to the demands of a given social role in society. Extends over several aspects of external behaviour. May be no internal changes. E.g. Zimbardo's prison experiment.

What are the 5 explaations for conformity?
Group size, task difficulty, unanimity, normative influence and informational influence

Explain group size
A person is more likely to conform when part of a larger group.

Explain task difficulty
When a person is unsure, they look to others for confirmation. The more difficult the task, the greater the levels of conformity.

Explain unanimity
A person is more likely to conform if all other members of the group are in agreement

Explain normative influence
The desire to be liked - when an individual conforms to fit in with the group because they don't want to appear foolish or be left out.

Explain informational influence
The desire to be right - when an individual conforms because they are unsure of the situation or lack knowledge so looks to others who they believe have more knowledge than them. Tends to lead to internalisation.
