what is majority influence?
when the majority of a group tries to influence others in the group to conform to their beliefs

following orders from someone we see as having more authority than us

what is crowd and collective behaviour?
the actions of people who have gathered together for a particular purpose. The behaviour of crowds can often be spontaneous and unplanned for example, people might find themselves acting in a way that they wouldn't normally do

what are situational factors?
how external influences affect our behaviour

what is normative conformity?
where people yield to group pressure because they want to fit in and are concerned about being rejected by the others in the group

what are group norms?
specific ideas or assumptions held by a particular group about what is considered acceptable behaviour within that group

what is a confederate?
someone who appears to be a participant in an experiment but is actually working for the researcher to manipulate the experiment

what is informal conformity?
people who conform because they want to be perceived as correct and so follow the lead of others

what does it mean if someone is in-group?
someone who is part of your group. this could be someone who lives in the same area as you, shares the same interests as you or is in the same class or sports team

what does it mean if someone is out-group?
someone who is not in your group. it could be that they support a different football team to you or your in a different class

what is deindividuation?
when people are in a crowd and they lose their sense of individuality and feel more anonymous. this can also happen if someone is wearing a uniform or costume

what does collectivist culture mean?
the needs of the group are seen as more important than the needs of an individual, and the individuals in the society view themselves as independent or connected to other people

what does individualist culture mean?
the needs of the individual are seen as more important than the needs of the group, and the individuals in the society view themselves as independent

what is altruism?
helping or showing concern for others without expecting any reward. it is an unselfish act which could end up disadvantaging the person who is offering the help
