What is the background of the study?

Previous studies have shown increasing interest in the issue of the precision of visual representations
results showed that the majority of observers did not report seeing the unexpected event even though it was clearly visible

Participants had to watch video tapes of 2 teams of 3 players passing basketballs and were told to pay attention to either the team in white or black

Participants were told to keep a silent mental count of the total number of passes made by the team (easy condition) or instead they had to keep a separate silent mental count of the no of bounce and aerial passes made (hard condition)

After viewing the video tape and performing the monitoring task participants were asked to write down their counts on paper and were asked if they saw anything unusual

What were the findings?

54% noticed the unexpected event
More noticed the UE in the opaque condition(67%) than the transparent
More participants noticed the UE in the easy (64%) than hard
the umbrella woman (65%) noticed more than the gorilla (44%)

What are the conclusions?

-individuals have a sustained inattentional blindness for dynamic events
-individuals fail to notice an unexpected event if they are engaged in a primary monitoring task
-the levels of inattentional blindness depends on difficulty of primary task
