Outline the 2 aims of Simons and Chabris
To see what role attention plays in visual perception. To see to what degree the details of our visual world are perceived and represented.
1 of 22
Name the research method of Simons and Chabris
Laboratory experiment. Independent measures
2 of 22
Describe the IV of this study
Which condition the ppts took part in: 1) Transparent Umbrella condition, 2) Transparent gorilla condition, 3) Opaque umbrella condition, 4) Opaque gorilla condition
3 of 22
What were the four conditions divided in?
White easy/hard, Black easy/hard
4 of 22
What was the DV in this experiment?
Number of ppts who noticed the unexpected event
5 of 22
What was conducted as a control?
A controlled observation, where the ppts watched a different video, they had to attend to the white team and engage in an easy monitoring task
6 of 22
Describe the sample used in this study
228 ppts (36 of these were discarded), undergraduates, all volunteered. In the control group there were 12 participants.
7 of 22
Describe the stimulus
4 video tapes, 75s long. Each showed 2 teams (white/black shirts) of 3 basketball players. Passes were either bounce/aerial passes. After 44-48s the unexpected event occurred.
8 of 22
Describe the basketball playing
Moved around in an open area in front of a bank of 3 elevator doors passing a standard orange basketball to another.
9 of 22
What was the unexpected event?
Umbrella/Gorilla walked from left to right (lasted about 5s). In separate opaque condition gorilla walked thumped its chest and went.
10 of 22
How many experimenters were there?
21
11 of 22
What did the participants have to do?
Watch either the black/white team. Make a silent count of number of passes (easy) or count arial passes and bounce passes separately (hard). After the video they had to write down number of passes.
12 of 22
What were the 3 questions asked?
1) Did you notice anything unusual in the video? 2) Did you notice anything other than the 6 players? 3) Did you see a gorilla/umbrella woman walk through the screen? After any yes they were asked to give detail
13 of 22
Why was data discarded of 36 participants?
If they were familiar with the study or took part in something similar before
14 of 22
How long did each section last?
5-10 minutes
15 of 22
How was this study ethical?
Gave informed consent and were debriefed
16 of 22
How many people noticed the umbrella woman in the transparent condition?
White Easy: 58%, White Hard: 33%, Black Easy: 92%, Black Hard: 42%
17 of 22
How many people noticed the gorilla in the transparent condition?
White Easy: 8%, White Hard: 8%, Black Easy: 67%, Black Hard: 25%
18 of 22
How many people noticed the umbrella woman in the opaque condition?
White Easy: 100%, White Hard: 83%, Black Easy: 58%, Black Hard: 58%
19 of 22
How many people noticed the gorilla in the opaque condition?
White Easy: 42%, White Hard: 83%, Black Easy: 50%, Black Hard: 58%
20 of 22
How many people in the controlled observation noticed the event?
50%
21 of 22
What were the 2 conclusions of Simon and Chabris?
Individuals have sustained inattentional blindness for dynamic events. The level of inattentional blindness depends on the difficulty of the task
