Phallic Stage
This is the stage when children have a sexual desire for there opposite sex parent. This happens at age 3-5.

Identification
Adopting the attitudes and behaviour of the same sex parent.

Oedipus Complex
The conflict experienced by a boy in the phallic stage because he unconciously desires his mother.

Electra Complex
The conflict experienced by a girl because she unconsiously desires for her father.

Observation
Watching a role model doing something.

Reinforcement
When a role model gets praised for what they are doing.

Imitation
When the child does what there role model has been praised for.

Vicarious Reinforcement
The child has learnt from the praise that there role model has recieved.

Gender Schema
The mental building block of knowledge that contains information about each gender - behaviours, clothes, activities, personality traits and roles linked to each sex.

Gender Stereotype
When all males and females are seen as being similar. Some peoples gender schemas are made up of gender sterotypes. For example builders are men and secretaries are woman.

Highly Gender Schematised
Whe gender is very important and information is organised according to gender appropriate and inappropriate roles.

Modelling
A role model provides an example for the child.

Sex Identity
A biological term. A child's sex can be identified by their hormones and chromosomes. This determines whether the child's sex identity is male or female.

Gender Identity.
A psychological term. A child's gender can be identified by their attitudes and behaviour. This determines whether the child's gender identity is masculine or feminine.

Gender Disturbance
Not developing the gender identity usually associated with one's sex.
