Basic Notes
Plants need certain elements from mineral ions in the soil in order to produce important compounds. If they lack one or more of these, the plant will suffer deficiency symptoms.
1 of 10
What are the four main ions/elements needed?
1) Nitrates; 2) Phosphates; 3) Potassium; 4) Small amounts of Magnesium
2 of 10
What are nitrates used for?
Contain nitrogen for making amino acids and proteins, needed for cell growth.
3 of 10
What are nitrate deficiency symptoms?
1) Growth is stunted; 2) Older leaves turn yellow
4 of 10
What are phosphates used for?
Contain phosphorus for making cell membranes and DNA, and needed for respiration and growth
5 of 10
What are phosphate deficiency symptoms?
1) Poor root growth; 2) Older leaves turn purple
6 of 10
What is potassium used for?
Help the enzymes needed for photosynthesis and respiration
7 of 10
What are potassium deficiency symptoms?
1) Poor flower growth; 2) Poor fruit growth; 3) Discoloured leaves
8 of 10
What is magnesium used for?
Making the chlorophyll needed for photosynthesis
9 of 10
What are magnesium deficiency symptoms?
Yellow leaves
