What is Solid State storage?
Storage device- uses ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS & No moving parts to store data ELECTRONICALLY. (e.g USB Flash Drive)
1 of 20
What is Optical Disk Storage & an example?
Stores media that is written/read with LASERS. Disk spin to allow laser to read from correct location. Surface has billions of locations where holes = burned or not burned (1 or 0). E.g. = CDs/DVDs/Blu-ray.
2 of 20
What is Magnetic Storage & example?
Includes Internal hard disk. A circular disk spins to allow disk's READ-WRITE Head to access data in specific segment- Happens QUICK (7,200 revolutions per min.)
3 of 20
What is Cloud Storage?
Data is stored AWAY from computer accessed on- stored on other machines. Data is accessed over Internet. Cloud storage is not physical.
4 of 20
Solid State Capacity?
Typically range from 1GB to 64 GB- higher capacities being developed.
5 of 20
Optical Disk Capacity?
CDs: 700 MB. DVDs: 4.7 GB. Blu-Rays: 25 GB.
6 of 20
Magnetic Storage Capacity?
Variable- new computers can have disks with capacities measured in Terabytes
7 of 20
Cloud Storage Capacity?
Virtually unlimited- though normally must pay for space you use
8 of 20
Solid State Speed?
USB 2.0 technology transmits data at 5 million bits per second
9 of 20
Optical disk speed?
Highly variable- Blu-rays = much quicker than DVDs/CDs
10 of 20
Magnetic Storage speed?
Data transfer from an internal drive is normally far quicker than external device
11 of 20
Cloud storage speed?
Depends on internet connection speed- generally slower than physically storing data
12 of 20
Solid State storage Portability?
Very small/light; designed to be moved between PC's
13 of 20
Optical disk storage portability?
Small/light- not as easy to carry as USB flash drive.
14 of 20
Magnetic storage portability?
Difficult and time consuming to move an internal drive from one machine to other
15 of 20
Cloud storage portability
Excellent (if you have a working Internet connection)- no need to carry storage device & can be accessed from any where in world
16 of 20
Solid state Durability?
USB flash drives = generally very sturdy
17 of 20
Optical disks durability?
Quite sturdy, although scratched surface makes data irretrievable
18 of 20
Magnetic storage durability?
Very well protected inside PC. Protected by sturdy metal case when removed.
19 of 20
Cloud storage durability?
Cloud data normally backed up multiple times -> durability is not an issue.
