?
What are corticosteroids?
A class of drug that lower inflammation in the body
1 of 7
What does cortisol do?
Acts on carboydrate and proteins to decrease uptake and increase catabolism
Act via glucocorticoid receptors
2 of 7
What does aldosterone do?
Regulates water and electrolyte balance
3 of 7
How is glucocorticoid release regulated?
Under the control of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis
Subject to negative feedback contol
4 of 7
What is the mechanism of action of glucocorticoids?
Can upregulate transcriptional machinery (TM) that is operating at a low level, or repress the activity of transcription factors (TF) on the TM
5 of 7
How does the mechanism of action of glucocorticoids facilitate the action of anti-inflammatory and immunosupressives?
aid in silencing the proinflammatory genes leading to decreased synthesis of cytokines, chemokines, adhesion molecules and inflammatory mediators
