population
collection of all individual people or items
1 of 17
finite population
population of a discernible size e.g. pupils at a school
2 of 17
infinite population
population of infinite/indiscernible size e.g. grains of sand on a beach
3 of 17
countably infinite population
population with a countable number of elements but counting up to reach one such element could take forever e.g. no of throws of a dice before a 6 is obtained
4 of 17
Census
an investigation which obtains information from all members of the population
5 of 17
sample
a group of individuals which form a subset of the population
6 of 17
sample survey
an investigation using a sample
7 of 17
sampling units
the individual units of a population (i.e. each child in a class would be a sampling unit)
8 of 17
sampling frame
a list/index of all sampling units
9 of 17
population parameter
any measurable characteristic of a population
10 of 17
statistic
a quantity which is a function of a set of observations which does not involve any unknown parameters
11 of 17
sampling distribution
the probability distribution of a statistic which gives all its possible values and the probability of each occurring
12 of 17
test statistic
summary of the evidence from a sample
13 of 17
null hypothesis
the hypothesis we assume to be correct unless there is evidence otherwise, H0
14 of 17
alternative hypothesis
hypothesis which tells us about the value of a population parameter should we reject H0
15 of 17
critical region
the set of values of the test statistic for which H0 is rejected in a hypothesis test
16 of 17
significance level
the probability of rejecting H0
