Aim
to test the hypothesis that psychiatrists cannot tell the difference between the sane and the insane

8 pseudo-patients (5 men and 3 female) some of which were psychologists themselves. Rosenhan also took part in his own study as a Pseudo-patient

Study 1
The 8 pseudo-patients were sent to 12 different hospitals and were told to explain that they had been hearing voices saying 'thud' 'hollow' and 'empty'. These hospitals were across 5 states in the USA

Once inside the pps behaved normally and were asked by Rosenhan to observe the behaviour of the staff. Pseudo-patients had to persuade the staff that they were sane

After Rosenhan published his results the hospitals were shocked and asked Rosenhan to send more pseudo-patients. They were warned that more will be sent, when actually NONE did
