Steep-sided areas are used for goats (milk, cheese and meat). Some sunnier places have been terraced to plant vineyards.

How is Hydro-electric Power produced on the Alps?
The narrow valleys are dammed. Switzerland get 60% of its electricity from HEP stations in the alps. Electricity produced is used locally and is exported.

Describe tourism in the alps.
100 million tourists each year. 70% of tourists visit the mountains for skiing and snowboarding etc. Summer tourists come for walking and mountain biking.

What type of mining is done on the alps?
Salt, iron ore, gold, silver and copper were mined in the alps. Declined rapidally due to cheaper foreign sources.

Scots Pine due to it being resilient to goats.

How have people changed to cope with the Steep Relief on the Alps?
Goats are farmed because they are well adapted. Trees and man made defences protect against avalanches.

Animals are farmed instead of crops. The soil is not good enough to produce crops.

How have people adapted to cope with the poor communications in the Alps?
Roads have been built though the mountains and over passes (lower points between mountains). This has improved the transport links in and out of Switzerland and the alps.
