How did the Constituent Assembly uphold the monarchy?
Louis retained the right to appoint his own ministers, ambassadors and military commanders. He was granted 25 million livres to allow the royal family to continue to live lavishly.

What economic reforms did the Constituent Assembly make?
Summer of 1789- the taille and the gabelle as well as tithes and feudal dues were abolished; tax farming was also removed.

When was Church Land nationalised by the Assembly?
November 1789- they used it to pay for the things that the taxes and tithes would have paid for- it raised over 400 million livres. Around half was purchased by the bourgeoisie.

Why were the assignats introduced?
So that the bourgeoisie could buy the biens nationaux, or church land.

When was the Civil Constitution of the Clergy sanctioned and what was it?
July 1790- put the church under state control- all priests were to be paid by the state- seen as a major challenge to the authority of the Pope.

What happened after the Civil Constitution of the Clergy?
In November, the Assembly demanded all religious figures swear allegiance to the revolution with an oath- only 7 out of 83 bishops and half the parish priests did so.

What other reforms did the Constituent Assembly make?
They abolished censorship of the press, as well as the parlements and the lettres de cachet in August 1790.
