State the method of the ruler drop test.

PART ONE
1. Sit with forearm resting on edge of table with forefinger and thumb open.
2. Place ruler vertically on top of the fingers.
3. Eyes facing ahead.
4. Partner drops ruler unexpectedly.

State the method of the ruler drop test

PART TWO
5. Try catch ruler as soon as possible
6. Read the value on top of the thumb.
7. Repeat 10 times to get a mean distance.
8. Convert to seconds.
9. Change the stimulus you are measuring.

What factors could affect reaction time?
- age
- drugs
- alcohol
- energy levels
- distractions
3 of 11
What stimuli could you investigate during this experiment?
- amount of caffeine
- two people
- left and right hand
4 of 11
What is the IV in this experiment?
The stimulus
- amount of caffeine
- the person catching
- dominant or undominant hand
...
5 of 11
What is the DV in this experiment?
Reaction time (how long it takes to catch
the ruler)
6 of 11
What are the CVs in this experiment?
- person catching (if not stimulus)
- type of ruler
- same hand (if not stimulus)
- same height that ruler is dropped from
7 of 11
How else could you measure reaction time?
Using a computer
(click the screen as soon as stimulus is seen)
8 of 11
Why is using a computer better than doing the required practical?
- remove possibility of human error
- exact time in milliseconds (more accurate)
- removes prediction of when to respond (people may read body language in person)
9 of 11
How can the reflex arc explain reaction time?

PART ONE
1. Eye receptors detect a stimulus
(ruler dropping)
2. Sensory neurons send electrical impulse to
relay neuron in spinal cord in CNS via synapse.
3. Relay sends electrical impulse to motor neuron via synapse.
10 of 11
How can the reflex arc explain reaction time?
4. Motor neuron sends electrical impulse to effector.
5. Effector produces a response (pinching thumb and finger together to catch ruler)
THE FASTER THE MESSAGES ARE SENT AROUND THE REFLEX ARC THE QUICKER THE REACTION TIME.
