What is the humours theory of mental health?
belief madness resulted from an imbalance of four bodily humours (blood, phlegm, yellow and black bile), depression thought to be a result of excess black bile

What is the statistical infrequency definition of abnormality?
Any behaviour that is shown less that the normal amount for that society is abnormal. E.g. 3.45% of people in the UK suffer from Schizophrenia

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, predominantly used in the USA, offers a starting point to identify a disorder but do not offer explanations or treatment

International Classification of Disorders, predominantly in the rest of the world, updated to allow for changes in social attitudes or norms

What is a reliability problem of diagnosis?
could be influenced by corporate pressure- Krimsky and Cosgrove 69% of the panel working on DSM-5 had links with pharmaceutical industry

What is the reliability of diagnosis (continued)?
Spitzer and Fleiss- looked at the Kappa value for various disorders, level of reliability is no better than fair for psychosis and schizophrenia and poor for the remaining categories

What is a validity of diagnosis?
used by practitioners in what could be a subjective way- Ford and Widiger- presenting same symptoms but changing gender resulted in different diagnoses

How is depression diagnosed? (affective disorder)
typical symptoms: depressed mood, loss of interest and enjoyment, increased fatiguability (learn symptoms from DSM-5)

What is the medical model of mental illness?
thought to be a physical cause, considers symptoms to be outward signs of inner physical disorder, believe that if symptoms grouped together as a 'syndrome' where the cause can be discovered and treatment administered
