Strength: Read et al (2005)
Meta-analysis of 46 studies on child abuse and schizophrenia. 69% of adult woman with schizophrenia had history of physical or/and sexual abuse in childhood. Men had 59%.

Adults with insecure attachments with primary caregiver are more likely to develop schizophrenia.

Weakness: Recalling memories.
Most studies use information that is collected after the development of symptoms occur and therefore the disorder of schizophrenia may have distorted the recall of childhood. Therefore, affecting validity.

Weakness: Consistency of evidence
Their is a lack of consistency in supporting evidence of family dysfunction in schizophrenia. This may further reduce validity.

Weakness: Schizophrenogenic Mother
It is socially sensitive to schizophrenics parents as it suggests its their fault. It may lead to parents not taking their child in if they start to show signs of schizophrenia symptoms because of the fear of being labelled a 'bad parent'.

Strength: Cognitive Explanation
Stirling et al (2006) - Compared 30 schizophrenic patients with 18 controls on a range of cognitive tasks. (E.g. Say the ink of colours of colour words). Schizophrenic patients took twice as long to recall ink.

Weakness: Causality
There is a lack of evidence to suggest what causes what, i.e whether cognitive factors are a cause of schizophrenia or the result of. Hard to determines its validity.
