Behavioural explanation of schizophrenia
Operant conditioning can be used to explain the development of schizophrenia
where attention is the positive reinforcement. A person's abnormal behaviour
attracts peoples' attention which the person will enjoy resulting in an increase in
abnormal behaviour to gain more attention. The behaviour will become more
abnormal until they are classed as schizophrenic.
Hard to see how attention alone can account for extreme symptoms such
as catatonia
Could account for why behavioural symptoms get worse after a person
has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
