Why would the median be used as opposed to the mean?
The median is a more representative form of a measure of central tendency (average) when there is anomalous data, or ‘outliers’. Why? – this is because any ‘extreme’ or ‘unusual’ scores that would otherwise artificially inflate or deflate the average
