BOYS - An unconscious conflict that occurs in boys when they desire their mother yet fear their father - fear the boy will get castrated

What is castration anxiety?
The fear experienced by boys when they believe they will have their penis removed by their father as he has found out about the boys lust for his mother and also as his father has a bigger penis

What is the Electra Complex?
GIRLS - An unconscious conflict that occurs in girls when they desire their father yet worry about losing their mother's love

What, according to Freud, do girls experience during the Electra Complex?
Penis envy - they are jealous of men and boys as they posses a penis whereas they don't. They substitute this with wanting a baby by their father

What defence mechanism is used to forget these complexes?
Repression - push these desires into our unconscious mind. Reducing the tension between the children and same sex parents

What was the case study used by Freud to demonstrate the Oedipus Complex?
LITTLE HANS. Father of Hans wrote to Freud about his fear of white horses. Freud said the fear was unconscious fear of his father who had dark glasses (blinkers) and black beard (like horses) even though Hans had seen a horrible accident with horses
