What are the 2 migration processes?
- Chain Migration (e.g. Mexicans in Santa Barbara, North Koreans in New Malden, south London)
- Step Migration (e.g. from a village in Chiapas to Mexico City)

Chain Migration
Migrants from a particular area follow others from that area to a particular area. The destination may be in another country or in a new location within the same country. People are more likely to move to where people they know live.

Step Migration
A migrant moves in stages from the source area stopping along the way for a period of time before carrying on whilst moving along the settlement hierarchy (i.e. village to town to city). The migrant may never reach their intended destination.

Why is Step Migration used by many migrants?
- Many migrants can't afford the cost of the entire journey so needs to stop along the way to earn more money for the next stage.
- Other migrants may have not planned to stage their migration but have temporarily stopped due to e.g. illness, getting ma
