What is a premature birth?
When baby is born before 37 weeks

What are the short term effects of a premature birth?
Have to stay in hospital in neonatal unit for monitoring, may need extra help with breathing at first, may need help with feeding at first and may have to be in an incubator

What are the long term effects of a premature birth?
Likely to have health or learning difficulties due to short growth time, can cause asthma and lung disease due to undeveloped lungs, may cause problems with sight, hearing and instestines

What is a post-term birth?
When baby is born after 40 weeks. Usually caused by maternal obesity, sulfatase deficiency in placenta, nervous system abnormalities or anencephaly (malformation of baby's skull)

What are the short term effects of a post-term birth?
Possible breathing and feeding problems, may have to be in an incubator

What are the long term effects of a post-term birth?
May be born with cerebral palsy, development disorders and brain damage. May be born at a heavy weight which may lead to metabolic issues or diabetes

Why does a post-term birth have an effect on baby's?
Placenta stops functioning after 42 weeks so fails to provide baby with enough oxygenated blood

What is a Cesarean section birth?
Baby is born via operation by opening up mother's stomach

What are the short term effects of a cesarean section birth?
May develop temporary breathing problems, may need extra help with baby's care whilst in recovery, likely baby and mother will have to stay in neonatal unit

What are the long term effects of a cesarean section birth?
Increased risk of asthma, diabetes type 1 and obesity

What are the short term effects of smoking on pregnant women and baby?
Cuts down the amount of oxygen being supplied to the baby which makes heart work harder, more likely to be premature
