Under intense pressure and very hot, it is a solid made of iron with aout 20% nickel content.
1 of 5
Outer Core
It is liquid and composed mostly of iron with a temperature of 4000-6000'C. We know it is a liquid bc seismic waves cannot pass through it.
2 of 5
Mantle
2300KM thick and consists of silicate materials it surrounds the core and makes up 685 of the bulk of the Earth and can be divided into the asthenosphere and the lithosphere.
3 of 5
Asthenosphere
Is largely solid with a temperature of 1000-1200'C. Although solid it is able to flow very slowly due to convection currents caused by the heating of the core.
4 of 5
Lithosphere
The upper mantle is more brittle and welded to the overlying crust and together they form the lithosphere which is around 50KM thick.
