What is an x-ray?
A wave that is part of the electromagnetic spectrum that has a very short wavelength an causes ionisation
1 of 8
What are some properties of x-rays?
affect photographic film, absorbed by metal and bone, transmitted by healthy tissue, wavelength is of the same order of magnitude as the diameter of an atom
2 of 8
What can x-rays be used for?
to diagnose and treat medical conditions (bone farctures, killing cancer cells, dental problems) use of CCDs allows images to be formed electronically
3 of 8
What is ultrasound what can it be used for?
waves higher than the human range of hearing 20,000Hz. Used for pre-natal scanning and kidney stones
4 of 8
How is ultrasound used?
They are partially reflected when they meet a boundary between two different media. The time taken for the reflections to reach a detector is used to determine how far away th eboundary is
5 of 8
How do you find the refractive indes?
1/sinc
6 of 8
What do optical fibres do in medical physics?
The endoscope used total internal reflection to send light into the body
7 of 8
How are laser used in medical pyhsics?
cutting, cauterising and burning (eye surgery)
