Physics P2 3.5 Explosions.

?
What does momentum have?
Like velocity, momentum has both size and direction.
1 of 11
In calculations, what must one direction be?
Defined as positive, so momentum in the opposite direction is negative.
2 of 11
When two objects are at rest, what is their momentum?
Zero.
3 of 11
How is the total momentum after an explosion zero?
In an explosion the objects move apart with equal and opposite momentum. One momentum is poise and the other negative, therefore the total momentum after the explosion is zero.
4 of 11
What is firing a bullet from a gun an example of?
An explosion.
5 of 11
What happens to momentum when a gun is fired?
The bullet moves off with a momentum in one direction and the gun 'recoils' with equal momentum in the opposite direction.
6 of 11
What happens when two objects push each other apart?
They move apart with different speeds if the have unequal masses but with equal and opposite momentum so their total momentum is zero.
7 of 11
What does momentum equal?
Mass times velocity (and velocity is speed in a certain direction).
8 of 11
What is the total momentum after an explosion equal to?
The total momentum before the explosion.
9 of 11
Two students on a roller skates stand holding each other in the playground. They push each other away. What can you say about the momentum of each student?
It is equal and opposite.

**IN CALCULATIONS INVOLVING THE CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM AND COLLISIONS OR EXPLOSIONS, IT OFTEN HELPS IF YOU SKETCH A DIAGRAM TO SHOW WHERE THE OBJECTS ARE BEFORE AND AFTER THE COLLISION OR EXPLOSION**
