Homophones
Words that are pronounced the same but spelt differently

Plosive
Articulators come together to stop airflow then release e.g. P, T, K, B, D, G

Fricative
Articulators positioned together leaving a small gap for the sound to come through e.g. F, V, S, Z and Th sounds

Affricate
Articulators come together then release but the sound is similar to fricative e.g. Ch and J

Nasal
Articulators stop airflow and release through the nose e.g. M and N

Lateral
Articulators come together and air is released over the sides of the tongue e.g. L

Approximant
Articulators don’t fully come together, sound is somewhere between fricative and vowel e.g. L, R, Y and W

Vowel sounds
Do not involve any restriction and release of airflow in the mouth. Vowels can be grouped depending on whether they are short, long or diphthongs.

Dipthongs
Are a combination of two sounds where a speaker moves from an initial sound to a second sound across the vowel

Sound iconicity
Refers to the way in which sounds mirror the actions that they describe or which are intended to draw attention to a relationship between sound and form.

Lexical onomatopoeia
A clear association between the sound of the word and its meaning

Non-lexical onomatopoeia
Group of letters used to demonstrate a sound and therefore meaning. These are not words that would be found in a dictionary

Alliteration
The repetition of two or more sounds

Consonance
A repeated set of consonant sounds

Assonance
A repeated set of vowel sounds

Sibilance
A repeated set of fricative sounds

Phonological manipulation
Involves making creative changes in sound patterns to give a particular effect
