Why is there a participation crisis?
Political apathy is growing, so democracy cannot be healthy when participants/citizens are becoming uninterested and unwilling to take part. This is evident due to the declining rates in participation turnout. 1950 84%>66.1% 2015.

What is 'political apathy'?
When more and more citizens seem to become uninterested with politics, this is evident when they stop enganging and dismiss the subject.

Why could the public be the right people to blame?
Suggested because in recent years, almost all democracies have experienced difficulties in mobilizing their electorates. Growing disengagement because social captial has declined. Parties are distancing from their ideolgies.

What is 'social capital'?
The levels of trust and sesne of social connectedness that helps to promote stability.

Why could the media be the right people to blame?
They are associated with a 'climate of cynicism' meaning there is a lack of participation due to trust. They present the wrong image of politics by presenting scandals/personal life stories. > Keith Vaz. Political debates are recieving less attention

Why could the politicians be the right people to blame?
'Lack of vision'>most politicians are only concerned with getting elected nowadays, meaning it has become another professional job.'Age of spin'>they are concerned with communication too much. MP is about how things appear/how they are. Lack of trust

What does it mean by a 'lack of choice'?
The two main parties Labour and Conservative are seperating themselves from their traditional ideolgies, creating a divide, so people may not have someone to vote for.
