pressure groups are tightly structured and often have an agenda - social movements are loose and may not have a specific policy - often a social movement will form a pressure group

sectional and cause

sectional
a group of people/section of society that are trying to pass legislation involving them - they may be selective- they provoke the interest in the cause eg trade unions

they campaign for a particular issue - they push for improvements for everyone. eg extinction rebellion

in the example of the British medical association
- a trader union- they campaigned against smoking in public places, for everyone not just themselves

a group that uses connections with the government and are likely to use them if what they want is close to what the government wants

groups that don't correspond with the government and who may want to go against the government

reasons for pressure group success
insider status, wealth, large membership, expertise, celebrity endorsement, organization

insider status
having close links to the government meaning they are able to influence ministers directly - eg 2012 British bankers association paid lobbyists to persuade ministers to cut corporate tax on overseas subsidies

wealth
financial resources allow pressure groups to pay for things that can help them promote their cause eg websites advertising lobbyists
eg 2014 hawerd league successfully campaigned to end the ban on prisoners receiving books

large membership
having a large membership allows you to influence a large section of the electorate - also it means you have lots of people who are prepared to take action such as signing pertisions
eg 2012 RMT union organized a series of strikes as there were concerns

a pressure group with expertise is more likely to be lisend to by the government and the public
eg 2016 aa provided evidence to persuade the government to increase penalties for people using there phones while driving
