What can the heating effect of absorbed radiation cause?
Damage to living cells
1 of 13
What affects the heating effect of absorbed radiation?
Its intensity and duration
2 of 13
What concerns do some people have about mobile phone handsets and masts?
concerns about health risks from low intensity microwave radiation although the evidence for this is disputed
3 of 13
How do microwaves heat food?
Some microwaves are strongly absorbed by water molecules and so can be used to heat objects containing water
4 of 13
How do microwave ovens protect users from the radiation?
Metal cases and door screens of microwave ovens reflect or absorb microwave radiation
5 of 13
What are radioactive materials?
Materials which emit ionising gamma radiation all the time
6 of 13
What can increased exposure to ionising radiation cause?
Damage to living cells increases eventually leading to cancer or cell death
7 of 13
What effect does absorbed ultraviolet radiation emitted by the Sun have on the ozone layer?
Produces a reversible chemical reaction which change ozone to oxygen
8 of 13
What is the role of the ozone layer?
Protects living organisms from some of the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation
9 of 13
What can be used to absorb some of the ultraviolet radiation from the Sun?
Sun-screens and clothing
10 of 13
Explain how X-rays are used to take medical images of bones?
X-rays are absorbed by bones because they are dense, so they do not reach the photographic plate underneath, so it stays white. Other tissues are not as dense so absorb less X-rays, so they pass through and cause photographic plate to darken
11 of 13
What are the uses of X-rays?
Medical X-rays of bones and scanning for objects in aircraft passengers’ luggage
12 of 13
How do radiographers protect themselves from radiation?
While the X-rays are taken radiographers stay behind dense materials such as lead and concrete
