Organisation - digestive system

?
define the word tissue
a group of cells with similar structure and function.
1 of 11
define the word organ
collection of tissues performing specific functions
2 of 11
describe how the stomach is adapted for its' role in digestion
muscular tissue for churning food and digestive juices together glandular tissue to produce digestive juices, epithelial tissue covering inside and outside of organ, covered in mucus to protect from acidic conditions
3 of 11
explain the difference between an organ and organ system
an organ is a group of tissue working together to perform one specific function whereas organ systems work together to form organisms
4 of 11
what is a protein
a protein is a long chain of amino acids
5 of 11
how are proteins used in the body
protein molecules can from enzymes (digestive catalysts). the long chains of amino acids fold together to form a 3D shape with an active site of a specific shape. these help speed up the reactions that break down food molecules speeding up digestion
6 of 11
how would you test for starch
iodine - if starch is present yellow/red iodine will go blue/black
7 of 11
how would you test for sugars
benedicts - blue solution will turn brick red while heating if glucose is present
8 of 11
how wuld you test for protein
buiret test- blue solution will turn purple if present
9 of 11
how would you test for lipids
ethanol test - when added to solution will form cloudy white layer if lipids present
10 of 11
explain how simple sugars are related to complex sugars
both are forms of carbohydrates, simple sugars are made up of one or two simple sugar units of glucose whereas a complex sugar is made up of a long chain of simple sugar units.
