1 of 11
Functional group
A group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a compound
2 of 11
Aliphatic
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight chains, branched chains or non-aromatic rings
3 of 11
Alicyclic
An aliphatic compound arranged in non-aromatic rings
4 of 11
Aromatic
A compound containing a benzene ring
5 of 11
Structural isomers
Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formulae
6 of 11
Homolytic fission
The breaking of covalent bond with one of the bonded electrons going to each atom, forming two radicals
7 of 11
Heterolytic fission
The breaking of a covalent bond with both of the bonded electrons going to each atom, forming a cation and an anion
8 of 11
Radical
A species with an unpaired electron
9 of 11
Stereoisomers
Compounds with the same structural formula but different 3D arrangement of atoms in space
10 of 11
Nucleophile
An atom (or group of atoms) which is attracted to an electron-deficient centre or atom, where it donates a pair of electrons to form a new covalent bond
