Most of Nepal has a fairly low density population with little urbanisation and because the earthquake hit midday, most of the Nepalese were out at work in the rural fields, thus reducing the death toll from those being killed in collapsing buildings

It has a low GDP (one of the poorest countries in the world), poor infrastructure and buildings not designed to withstand the effects of earthquakes.

Its position in the Himalayas meant that landslides were caused which heavily damaged rural areas
