what happens when- wide jaw opening
hinge +slide

What are the three groups of muscles involved in mastication?
between skull and the mandible( act across the TMJ + The muscles of muscles of mastication), between the mandible and hyoid and hyoid stabilisers
4 of 23
what are the muscles between the skull and mandible?
masseter, temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoid
5 of 23
where is the origin of the masseter?
the zygomatic arch/bone also the inner aspect of zygomatic arch
6 of 23
where does the masseter inset? and what is its innervation
it inserts by the angle/ ramus of mandible. innervated by Vc Motor root- masseteric nerve
7 of 23
where is the origin of temporalis?
inferior temporal line and fascia
8 of 23
where does the temporals insert and how is it innervated?
insets by the coronoid process. innervated by Vc motor root- deep temporal nerve
9 of 23
Where does the lateral pterygoid insert? upper and lower head
upper- capsule and articular disc of TMJ. Lower- pterygoid fovea below head of condyle
10 of 23
where is the lateral pterygoid origin? upper and lower head
upper: infra temporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid and lower: lateral aspect of lateral pterygoid plate
11 of 23
what innervates the temporalis?
Vc motor root- nerve to lateral pterygoid
12 of 23
where does the medial pterygoid insert?
medial aspect of ramus/ angle of mandible
13 of 23
where are the origins of medial pteryoid?
medial aspect of lateral pterygoid plate and maxillary tuberosity
14 of 23
what innervates the medial pterygoid?
Vc motor root- nerve to medial pterygoid
15 of 23
What are the muscles between the mandible and hyoid?
- geniohyoid, mylohyoid and digastric (anterior)
16 of 23
What innervates the geniohyoid muscle? where is the origin of this muscle?
innervated by C1 (with hypoglossal). origin: inferior mental spine and inferior genial tubercle
17 of 23
what innervates the mylohyoid ?
Vc motor root- nerve to mylohyoid (branch on IAN)
18 of 23
where is the origin of anterior belly of digastric?
digastric fossa
19 of 23
what is the action of ABD
hyoid fixed: jaw opening. hyoid not fixed: raise hyoid
20 of 23
what is ABD innervated by?
Vc motor root- via nerve to mylohyoid of (IAN|)
21 of 23
what are the muscles of hyoid stabilisers
stylohyoid, posterior digastric , infra hyoids- thyrohyoid, omohyoid and sternohyoid
