Was an area with few people so offered sanctuary. The Mormons were attacked by mobs and an extermination order was made

Mormons were hated by locals, especially when Smith started polygamy. Smith was killed in 1844

Founded by Brigham Young and the Mormons and they weren't to be interruted by other people.

Why they moved to Salt Lake
To escape from non-Mormons. The Mormons had been prosecuted with extermination order and they was asked to leave Illinois. Young said they were "to leave the country for the sake of peace". Salt Lake was a part of Mexico at the time.

Problems of Salt Lake
No trees - made sod houses. Used irrigation techniques (using snow) to water crops. Not enough people to be sustainable so Young asked all Mormons from the world to migrate. No manufaturers and industry failed.

Problems of Salt Lake Pt2
1848 the US occupied New Mexico which included Salt Lake and they were denied a free and independant state. 1857, the US sent 2500 troops and the Mormons prepared for war and Mountain Meadow Massacre happened. Eventually they became the US state Utah

Why were Mormons hated
It was a new religion. People disliked polygamy. Mormons cut themselves off from ordinary people. People didn't like large growing numbers. Feared they'd take over the government. "Low social class". They supported slaves rights
