Module 3: Forces and Motion

?
Thinking distance
The distance the car travels between the driver seeing the hazard and applying the brakes.
1 of 8
Braking distance
The distance the car travels between applying the brakes and coming to rest
2 of 8
Stopping distance
Total Stopping Distance= Thinking Distance+ Braking Distance
3 of 8
Factors that increase thinking distance
higher speed, tiredness, alcohol and drugs, distractions and age of the driver
4 of 8
Factors that increase braking distance
higher speed, poor road conditions, poor condition of brakes, poor condition of tyres and mass of car
5 of 8
Thinking Distance Equation:
reaction time of the driver x speed of the car
6 of 8
Braking Distance Equation:
decrease in kinetic energy=work done=force applied by brakes x distance moved by car (0.5 mv^2 = Fd)
7 of 8
Braking distance equation explanation:
When a car breaks, the kinetic energy of the car is transferred to the thermal energy in the brakes. The braking distance is directly proportional to the square of the car's initial speed.
