He built castles, surveyed the country for the domesday book and changed Saxon positions of power to Normans.

What was Trial By Combat?
A popular trial in France were the accused and accuser would fight until the death or one gave in. The loser was guilty. People could pay someone to fight for them.

What were Murdrum Fines?
A law that stated if a Norman was killed and the killer could not be found, the whole village would be given a large fine to pay. It encouraged people to bring up information about the killer.

Laws that applied to woodland protected by William I - Saxons could not hunt deer, carry a bow or chop wood from trees here.

There were a number of Rebellions when William I first came into power - he took decisive and harsh action by burning down villages and killing herds of livestock. This was designed to deter further rebellion.
