What was a blood feud?
The victim's family taking harsh revenge on the Criminal's family.

What was the problem with blood feuds?
The retaliation would often be harsher than the original crime, and so the criminal's family would do the same to balance it out - this could go on for generations.

What was Wergild?
Blood Money (compensation) - e.g. if you killed someone you owed a predetermined amount of money to their family.

What was The Hew and Cry?
If a community member saw a crime being committed they could cry for other members to help them -everyone in the village was expected to help.

What was a tithing?
A group of men responsible for each other's behaviour. If one committed a crime, the others had to bring him to justice or be punished too.
