Scalar and vector quantities
Scalar has magnitude only, e.g. speed Vector has both magnitude and direction e.g. velocity
1 of 32
Displacement
The distance moved in a stated direction
2 of 32
Speed
The rate of change of distance
3 of 32
Instantaneous speed
The gradient at a point on a DT graph
4 of 32
Average Speed
total distance travelled/the total time taken
5 of 32
Velocity
The rate of change of displacement
6 of 32
Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity
7 of 32
The Newton
The force required to accelerate 1kg by 1ms-2
8 of 32
center of gravity
the point at which the entire weight of an object seems to act
9 of 32
the moment of a force
force x perpendicular distance between the pivot and force
10 of 32
torque of a couple
one force x the perpendicular distance between the forces
11 of 32
Stress
force/cross-sectional area
12 of 32
strain
extension/origional length
13 of 32
young modulus
stress/strain (as long as the young modulus is not exceeded)
14 of 32
brittle
only behaves elastically / it breaks at its elastic limit
15 of 32
Ultimate tensile strength
the maximum stress that can be applied to an object before it breaks
16 of 32
work done by a force
force x distance moved in the direction of the force
17 of 32
elastic deformation
when the load is removed the material will return to its original shape/length
18 of 32
plastic deformation
when the load is removed the material will not return to its original shape (it has been permanently deformed)
19 of 32
elastic limit
the maximum load that can be applied to an object so that it will regain its original length once the load is removed
20 of 32
spring constant
where hookes law is obeyed. force per unit extension
21 of 32
the joule
when a force of 1N moves 1m in the direction of the force the work done is 1J
22 of 32
power
the rate of work done
23 of 32
the watt
one watt is one joule per second
24 of 32
pressure
force/area
25 of 32
density
mass/volume
26 of 32
Thinking distance
the distance travelled from seeing the reason to brake and applying the brakes
27 of 32
Braking distance
the distance travelled by the car whilst decellerating to a stop
28 of 32
Stopping distance
thinking distance + braking distance
29 of 32
principle of moments
for equilibrium the sum of the clockwise moments about a pivot is equal to the sum of the anticlockwise moments around the same pivot
30 of 32
conditions for an object to be in equilibrium
net force and net moment to equal 0
31 of 32
hookes law
force is directly proportional to extension as long as the eastic limit is not exceeded
