Elastic Deformation
A body which undergoes elastic deformation will returns to its original shape when an applied force is removed.
1 of 7
Plastic Deformation
A body which undergoes plastic deformation will not return to its original shape when an applied force is removed and so is permanently deformed.
2 of 7
Hooke's Law
A material obeys Hooke's law if its extention is directly proportional to the applied force. This is true as long as the elastic limit of the material is not exceeded.
3 of 7
Elastic Potential Energy
The energy stored in a material by changing its shape through compression or tension.
4 of 7
Stress
The force acting per unit cross sectional area.
5 of 7
Strain
The fractional change in the original length produced by tensile or compressive forces.
6 of 7
Young Modulus
The Young Modulus of a material is the ratio of stress over strain and is measured of the material's stiffness.
