Stiffness
Resistance to deformation under the action of an applied force e.g. in tension. Steel is a Tough material
1 of 6
Strength
Resistance to breaking under the action of an applied force. Steel is a very strong material
2 of 6
Toughness
Resistance to cracking. The material fails through permanent plastic deformation by absorbing energy. Leather is tough.
3 of 6
Brittleness (opposite of tough)
Prone to cracking. The material fails through crack propagation. Glass and ceramics are brittle.
4 of 6
Ductility
Ability to be drawn into wire. Copper and Lead are ductile.
5 of 6
Hardness
Resistance to indentation or scratching. Diamond was the hardest known material.
