Organisations need to keep records for long period of time, so its important that any developments in ICT systems need to have a vast storage capacity, to cope with high volumes of data.
Organisations are storing more details about customer orders compared to 10 years ago, in order to extract key information about their shopping habits and use this information for marketing strategies.

Some retailers offer a loyalty card scheme used to gather information about people's shopping habits and methods of payment to target them with promotions etc.
Most organisations often store copies of their emails, answer machine recordings, letters and memos in case they ever need to refer back to them for evidence, or refer back to them for legal reasons.
