What causes Cystic Fibrosis?

The two parents are carriers of the recessive gene and they each pass on one gene resulting in a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with Cystic Fibrosis.

A blood test may be carried out during pregnancy and if that indicates the baby has CF, the baby will undergo a sweat test. What is the procedure for the sweat test?

An electrical stimulation is applied to a small area on the arm or leg to encourage the sweat glands to produce sweat, the sweat is collected and then tested for chloride, if the person has high levels of chloride it is likely CF will be diagnosed.
