What is urbanisation
The growth in the proportion of a country's population living in urban areas compared to those living in rural areas
1 of 20
Define mega city
A city with a total population over 10 million
2 of 20
Define world city
A city that has global influence and are centres for business and trade. They are hubs of culture and science, with international media centres and famous landmarks/ universities
3 of 20
What are two factors that cause rapid population increase?
Migration and a high birth rate
4 of 20
What is rural to urban migration
People moving from rural to urban areas for a better quality of life (pull factors)
5 of 20
What is internal growth?
When people who have moved into cities have lots of children
6 of 20
What is suburbanisation
The movement of people from city centres to the outskirts of the city (the suburbs)
7 of 20
What is counter urbanisation
The movement of people away from large urban areas to rural area
8 of 20
What is re-urbanisation
The movement of people back into urban areas
9 of 20
What is natural increase
When the birth rate is higher than the death rate

What happens at a high pressure system
When air cools it becomes denser and sinks towards the ground,
leading to high pressure against the ground (Atmospheric air pressure increases)
11 of 20
Weather associated with high pressure
High-pressure systems are usually associated with clear skies and dry,
hot weather.
12 of 20
What happens at a low pressure system
Hot air rises as it becomes less dense, so
less air is pressing down
on the ground; leading to low
pressure at the surface. It cools and condenses forming cloud and moisture falls from the atmosphere as precipitation
13 of 20
What weather is associated with low pressure
Unsettled weather and differences in temperature between day and night are unlikely to be
large as the cloud cover reflects solar radiation during the day and traps
it at night.
14 of 20
Convection currents
Magma heats up from the core, it becomes less dense and rises upwards. As it rises, it diverges and drags the plates in opposite directions. It starts to cool and becomes dense, sinking downwards.
15 of 20
What happens at destructive plate boundaries
Oceanic plate and continental plate move toward each other and the oceanic plate sub-ducts under the continental plate as its denser. It is forced in the mantle and melts; Causes formation of volcanoes and ocean trenches.
16 of 20
What happens at a conservative plate boundary
Two plates move parallel to each other in different directions or speeds
17 of 20
What happens at a collision plate boundary
Two continental plates move towards each other collide and are forced upwards, folding into each other; causes formation of fold mountains
18 of 20
What happens at constructive plate boundary
Two plates move away from each other and magma rises to fill the gap but cool and condenses, forming new crust
19 of 20
Define the term rapid influx
Lots of people moving to a specific area at a time
