Clues

  • Ca2+. Transmission of nerve impulses, release of insulin from pancreas. Cofactor for many enzymes. Bone formation. (7)
  • Cl-. Involved in Chloride shift that helps maintain pH of blood during gas exchange. Acts as a cofactor for enzyme amylase. Some nerve impulses. (8)
  • Contains NO carbon. Important in biological processess. (9, 3)
  • H+. Affects pH of ions, more H+ ions is more acidic, also involved in photosynthesis reaction that takes place in the thylakoid membranes. (8)
  • HCO3-. Acts as a buffer, maintains pH of blood. (8, 9)
  • K+. Nerve impulses. Muscle contraction. Regulating fluid balance. Activates essential enzyme for photosynthesis in plants. (9)
  • NH4+. Absorbed by plants from soil, important source of nitrogen for e.g amino acids, nucleic acids. (8)
  • NO3-. Absorbed by plants from soil. Important source of nitrogen. (7)
  • OH-. Affects the pH of substances. More OH- creates more Alkali. (9)
  • PO43-. Photosynthesis and respiration reactions. Needed for synthesis of biological reactions eg nucleotides, phospholipids, calcium phosphate. (9)
