ICT systems

?
What is a personal computer?
general purpose computers and include desktop computers, laptops, netbooks, notebooks, tablets, PDAs, smartphones and other handheld devices. Typical software applications include word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail clients

What is a mainframe computer?
these are power computers mostly used by large organisations for processing and storing large amounts of information. Commonly used for financial transaction processing. like in a bank
2 of 16
What is a super computer?
these perform calculations faster than any other type of computer. For this reason they are best suited to perform complex calculations for simulation and modelling, often in the field of scientific research.

What is a embedded system?
these are computer microchips found in electrical applicances, such as washing machines, microwaves or DVD players. They usually perform one or two specific tasks and cannot be changed by the user of the appliance.
4 of 16
Advantages of embedded systems
Advantages are that they can make the appliance easier to use, freeing up people's time for other activities. They often help to save energy and can be programmed to perform repetitive tasks automatically (eg washing and drying clothes).
5 of 16
Disadvantages of embedded systems
they can make appliances more expensive, can be difficult to repair (usually needing a specialist to repair them) and sometimes using their advanced features can be too complicated for the average user.

What is hardware? ( what does it refer to )
the actual parts of a computer system. These include processing, input, output and storage devices. hardware is something that we can physically touch
7 of 16
What is software?
provides the instructions that the system needs in order to carry out tasks required by the user. this is something you can not physically touch
8 of 16
what is a user interface?
These provide a platform for interaction between humans and computer systems.
9 of 16
What goes GUI stand for?
Graphical User Interface
10 of 16
what is a graphical user interface?
most popular type of user interface, used in computers and portable devices. largely based on graphics rather than text.also called a WIMP system because of its key features: Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointers.
11 of 16
what does WIMP stand for?
Windows - you can have more than one program open at once Icons - make attractive and quick to find programs and files. menus - easy to select options and the pointer allows you to select things quickly and easily pointers - you can select things
12 of 16
What is a command line interface?
This involves the user entering text commands. They are quick and don't need much memory or power to run. The obvious disadvantage is that the user has to know the commands to be able to use these interfaces.
13 of 16
what is a direct neural interface?
A direct communication pathway between the brain and an external device. Direct-neural interfaces are often aimed at assisting, combining or repairing human cognitive or sensory-motor functions.
14 of 16
what are some examples of hardware input devices?
Keyboards, mouse , joystick , microphone, remote control , scanner , webcam , touch screen, digital / video camera, Graphics tablet
15 of 16
what are some example of hardware output devices?
Monitor , printers , speakers , sound / video cards
