How does snow become ice?
Snow falls on the glacier- low density then compaction converts it into opaque ice (Neve). Further compaction converts this into glacial ice.

How long does it take for snow to become ice?
25 years in switzerland but 200 years in Greenland! DEPENDS
5 of 13
Ice Sheet?
large body of ice over 50,000km2 in extent.
6 of 13
Ice cap?
body of less than 50,000km2 of ice, found in mountainous regions.
7 of 13
Valley Glacier?
a finger of ice usually extending downhill from a ice cap and occupying a valley.
8 of 13
Basal slip?
Melt water in the summer reaches the base of a glacier and allows it to slide over rocks.
9 of 13
Internal Deformation?
Ice crystals deform and slide past each other allowing the glacier to move.
10 of 13
Arete?
A knife-edged ridge often formed between two corries.
