Hydrocarbons as Fuels

?
What is incomplete combustion?
When there is not enough air fr complete combustion, so Carbon Monoxide, or Particulates are produced, rather than Carbon Dioxide
1 of 12
What is complete combustion?
When there is plenty of fuel, so the carbon is oxidised to carbon dioxide
2 of 12
What is wrong with carbon dioxide?
It is a greenhouse gas, so releasing more CO2 will increase global warming.
3 of 12
What happens to hydrocarbons during combustion?
Hydrogen is oxidised to water,
4 of 12
What is the equation for hydrocarbon combustion?
Hydrocarbon + Oxygen GOES TO carbon dioxide + water
5 of 12
What is wrong with carbon monoxide?
It is a toxic gas, can affect breathing
6 of 12
What does carbon dioxide dissolve in water to form?
A weakly acid solution
7 of 12
What does acid rain react with?
Metals and rocks such as limestone, causing damage to building and statues. Also damages trees, and makes lakes and rivers too acidic so aquatic creatures die.
8 of 12
What does coal and most hydrocarbon fuels naturally contain?
Sulphur compounds.
9 of 12
What happens when coals and hydrocarbons that contain sulphur compounds burn?
The sulphur is oxidised to produce sulphur dioxide
10 of 12
What can happen to sulphur before fuels are used?
It can be removed.
11 of 12
How can sulphur dioxide be removed from waste gases?
The waster
