- Fossil Fuels
- Fossil Fuels are Hydrocarbons
- Many hydrocarbons are fossil fuels: formed from the remains of dead animals and plants over millions of years.
- Petrol, Diesel and Fuel Oil are mixtures of hydrocarbons.
- Hydrocarbon = a compound of hydrogen and carbon.
- The only difference between fuels (the ones mentioned) is the SIZE of the hydrocarbons they contain.
- Coal isn't a hydrocarbon, it contains lots of impurities but is mainly carbon.
- Burning fuels = Oxidation
- Burning, know as combustion is a chemical reaction.
- When a hydrocarbon burns, the hydrogen atom combines with oxygen in the air forming hydrogen oxide (water).
- Carbon atoms combine with oxygen in the air to make carbon dioxide.
- When coals, you mostly get carbon dioxide.
- Reactions when oxygen is... added= combustion, lost= reduction.
- Pure oxygen can be obtained from the stratosphere and kept in pressurised cylinders.
