  • Fossil Fuels
    • Fossil Fuels are Hydrocarbons
      • Many hydrocarbons are fossil fuels: formed from the remains of dead animals and plants over millions of years.
      • Petrol, Diesel and Fuel Oil are mixtures of hydrocarbons.
      • Hydrocarbon =  a compound of hydrogen and carbon.
      • The only difference between fuels (the ones mentioned) is the SIZE of the hydrocarbons they contain.
      • Coal isn't a hydrocarbon, it contains lots of impurities but is mainly carbon.
    • Burning fuels = Oxidation
      • Burning, know as combustion is a chemical reaction.
      • When a hydrocarbon burns, the hydrogen atom combines with oxygen in the air forming hydrogen oxide (water).
        • Carbon atoms combine with oxygen in the air to make carbon dioxide.
      • When coals, you mostly get carbon dioxide.
      • Reactions when oxygen is... added= combustion, lost= reduction.
      • Pure oxygen can be obtained from the stratosphere and kept in pressurised cylinders.
